Garmin n vi 265WT 4 3 Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

April 6, 2009 by DigiBliss · Leave a Comment

Manufacturer’s Description (August 26, 2008)
Garmin’s nüvi 265WT improves upon its 200-series predecessors by adding free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device) as well as Bluetooth connectivity to your cell phone. Other significant improvements in the 2×5 series include a predictive technology that provides faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more information, terrain maps, and an exciting new photo navigation feature. The 265WT provides complete maps for North America and the handy Text-to-Speech feature, so you get turn-by-turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. “turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way”, rather than merely “turn left in 50 feet”).

The nüvi 2×5 models all sport the slim design that Garmin introduced with the 200-series last year, so they all fit comfortably in your pocket or purse, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that makes them convenient for navigation by car or foot. All of the models include useful travel tools like a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. The 265WT also offers a wide 4.3-inch (diagonal) screen that displays 70% more of the road around you.

Integrated Traffic Receiver

Steer clear of traffic with an integrated GTM 20 FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. No subscriptions or additional hardware needed. Just open the box, turn it on, and get instant access to traffic information–the traffic updates are free for the life of the device.

All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you’ll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you’re forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi’s sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, the traffic broadcasts are continuous–there’s no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a “silent” FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

Hands-Free Calling

In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. WIth Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker, you can match your nüvi to any Bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi’s touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone’s call history log.

New Improved Interface

One of Garmin’s key product philosophies is to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box, and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin’s portable navigation devices.

Garmin’s interface is a key to their success part of what makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and smooth map updates as you navigate.

This year, Garmin has redesigned its interface to include much more useful information.

New HotFix™ – aka: Satellite Ephemeris Data Prediction

hotfix Your GPS device locks onto transmissions from a dedicated network of Satellites in order to determine its position. Until the device gets a “lock” on three satellites, it can’t effectively navigate, so decreasing the time it takes for your device to get “satellite lock” is always a goal of GPS manufacturers. With Garmin’s new HotFix technology, your Garmin GPS remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. This gives the device an idea of where it should look for satellites, and dramatically decreases the time it takes for your Garmin to get its position and start navigating. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Using Garmin’s unique Web site — Garmin Connect Photos — users can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google’s Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nüvi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.

Widescreen — See More of What’s Around

The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

Wider screen lets you see more of what’s around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen

and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars JC Abq
I bought this GPS receiver about 5 weeks ago for my car because it was recommended in some places I did research (Consumer Reports, Amazon users, maybe CNET, etc.). Overall, it works well, but it has a few quirks. I put in a couple of local destinations I go to frequently, and the unit wants me to go in a roundabout way. Not a big deal as I know the area, but if you were in a new city and that happened, you’d probably lose time. I like the wide display, the “Where am I?” feature, and the voice prompts. Haven’t gone out of town with it yet, so no evaluation there. Supposed to have a free traffic feature, but I’ve seen no sign of its presence. The price dropped $50 in a month, so I wish I’d waited to buy.

3 Stars OK GPS but lacking
I’ve owned a Garmin C330 for over 5 years, and have grown to depend on it for traveling for work. I upgraded, mainly because the receiver in my C330 was taking too long to lock onto the GPS satellites and I wanted a wider screen. I opted for the traffic, mainly because it was only another 40 bucks, and if I keep this one for another 5 years, I don’t want to kick myself in the butt for not getting the additional feature. Anyway, my review focuses mainly on the device as a pure GPS device. I don’t care much for the photos, mp3 player, blue-tooth, etc.

PROS:

First Time to Lock: Took about 45 seconds.

Subsequent time to lock: Unit locks within 20-30 seconds

Speed limit sign: Very cool, and accurate, showing the current posted speed limit

Next Turn indicator: Again, really nice. New feature indicates the direction of an upcoming turn. It also shows which side of the road a particular destination will be as you are coming up on it.

Last entered city: Pull down for last cities entered. No more typing San Franciso, Santa Clara, etc.

Screen refresh and rendering is much faster than previous model.

Traffic: Although I haven’t used this much, it’s still cool to know that I can make decisions related to traffic reports.

CONS:

No outside volume control: This is HUGE for me. Of all the control I used on my C330, I frequently adjusted the volume control via the little control disk on the outside of the unit. Listening to the radio, talking on the phone and talking to passengers all encouraged me to frequently adjust the volume. To adjust the volume on the Nuvi, you must switch to a different screen to adjust volume, all the while, you no longer have a map view.

Voice is “Tinny” sounding: While decent, the voice on the C330 was much richer.

Tone before announcement: The C330 allowed you to set a function that alerted you before a voice announcement was to be made. This was a nice feature, because sometimes, you’re not paying attention to your GPS and a turn announcement can come to you as a surprise.

Power Cord: I liked the C series, because the power was built into the mount. All I had to do was pull it out of my glove compartment and attach it to the cradle. With the Nuvi, the power cord just dangles in the car until you connect. Then of course you have to take your eyes off the road while trying to figure out which way the little mini connector fits into the device. If you leave the device permanently mounted, this isn’t a big deal.

Pop-Up advertisement: Not a real big deal, but still an annoyance and it can’t be turned off. I’m waiting for the first law suit due to the distraction from the devices primary purpose.

In all, this device is OK. The biggest issues are the lack of integrated power to the cradle and external volume control.

5 Stars Out of the box this was and incredible BUY
I read a lot of reviews and was prepared for anything, including that this would be a good GPS as my first foray into the GPS arena. This is a GREAT GPS out of the box I think this unit is incredible.

Follow the instructions, maybe wait a month to do the update, but in any case, what a pleasure to use and so functional.

5 Stars Garmin Nuvi
The Garmin Nuvi 265W is just terrific. But I would have gotten one higher level in the series for more street detail, had I realized more specific features. This was my fault, not the product’s. An excellent buy and real help on the roads.

5 Stars Highly recommend the Garmin Nuvi 265WT
You can’t go wrong with this compact GPS. I have had others and this is by far the best. Easy to use and excellent at getting around. I’m a Realtor and it is essential in my job.

I love not having to wear my blue tooth in my ear while driving.

This GPS has it all and I am thrilled to have chosen one that far exceeds the others.

User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars NOT GOOD FOR A FIRST GPS
I’ve never owned a GPS before and was very excited when I seen the NAvigon 2200T on sale. i used my Christmas money to buy it and when it came in I quickly tried to get everything going, at first I thought because it never acquired a signal for the satellite after 20 minutes that I had to go online and put in some kind of code. But unfortunately I read the reviews after I had purchased this product and found out that just about everyone was having to wait that much time or more. The next day it took about 16 mins to acquire the signal so I was happy but ont he days it was cloudy, after 35 minutes driving to work still no signal. I waited to long to return it and now I’m stuck with a GPS I’m very dissatisfied with, would be afraid to rely on it to go somewhere. I wouldnt dare sell it to anyone out of pure guilt, I do not know how Amazon is still selling this product. I had borrowed a Garmin once before purchasing this one and I should have put in the extra money to get a great GPS. DON’T BUY THIS GPS, YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!

1 Star Just terrible
The device does not pick up a GPS signas. It didn’t work in Philadelphia, Minneapolis, and San Francisco. Its ridiculous. I got sent a 2nd device and it never picked up a signal. What kind of QA do they don these products. I am now getting a 3rd device and this time they are not giving a new one but repairing it. Pathetic. Stay away this product is junk.

5 Stars Works great
I like my Navigon potable GPS. Never failed me yet and the display is crystal clear. This is my first navigation system and I think it is better than my friends of other brands. The display is excellent, clear and easy to read.

5 Stars Features galore!
I am impressed with the all the features that come with this gps. Let me list some:

-Lane Pro and Reality View: No more getting confused at exits and lane changes.

-If you miss an announcement, one touch and it will be repeated.

-Upcoming maneuvers are shown well in advance.

-No more guessing what 100 feet is , the vertical bar on the corner indicates proximity.

-estimated time of arrival and distance to arrival.

-Quick calculations of alternate routes.

-It has a little compass, so you know which direction you are facing.

-Speed limit warning (specially useful after hurricane Ike took down the sign posts.

-Text to speech is amazingly clear.

-Traffic updates have saved me time.

-Customizations of all features.(Geeks will love the fact that almost every aspect can be customized)

-One button “take me home” feature.

-Your destination has a little arrow showing on which side of the street the address is.

-Shows you current elevation.

-One button access to nearest fuel, food or any POI of choice.

My only complaints are the user interface, it could be a little more user friendly. And it needs physical documentation, instead of the PDF file!

5 Stars Wonderful Product
i got this about a week ago and i love it, wonderful, just turn on and your off. Excellent features and on the money. good price too. 2 thumbs up.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Garmin Nuvi
The Garmin Nuvi 265W is just terrific. But I would have gotten one higher level in the series for more street detail, had I realized more specific features. This was my fault, not the product’s. An excellent buy and real help on the roads.

Sony NVU94T 4 8 Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic and Text to Speech

March 30, 2009 by DigiBliss · Leave a Comment

Manufacturer’s Review (September 2, 2008)
In addition to excellent navigation and convenient handsfree communication with your cell phone the Sony NV-U94T Portable GPS Navigator is also loaded with such entertainment features as an audio/video player, photo viewer, and Bluetooth stereo music streaming capabilities. But first and foremost a portable navigation system, the NV-U94T offers Sony’s POSITION plus solution to difficult GPS reception conditions for navigation assistance even while under dense foliage or tall buildings. And it can receive real-time traffic updates with the RDS-TMC receiver built into its cradle and a 90-day trial with the Traffic Message Channel (TMC) service. Other features include pre-installed maps for North America, over 5 million points of interest (POIs) with quicker searching, a 4.8-inch screen with Gesture Command, text-to-speech capabilities, and support for Memory Stick Duo media.

The NV-U94T portable navigation device also features a photo viewer, audio/video player and stereo Bluetooth technology for streaming audio and making hands-free phone calls.

GPS signals can easily be distorted by tall buildings, very dense foliage, or blocked altogether when underground, and when this happens a GPS device can easily give a false location. Sony’s POSITION plus feature is a unique, hardware-based solution that consists of an acceleration sensor, a pressure sensor and a gyro sensor that together can calculate the vehicle’s current position based on the last known GPS location. The result is a more consistent and accurate position that helps provide interruption-free guidance under the most difficult of GPS reception conditions.

Enjoy powerful, portable navigation out of the box pre-loaded map content covering North America–Canada and all of the United States (including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico)–as well as over 5 million POIs. During address searches, the device can automatically complete partial entries of states, cities and street names. The new Sony nav-u device also offers a revised search algorithm for quicker POI searches and the Quick Link search features that provides a one-touch search for your favorite POI. For example, you can save a favorite coffee shop destination to a Quick Link button and perform that search any number of times without having to retype the search string. Brand icons help users quickly and easily identify their favorite restaurants, hotels, gas stations, stores and other locations while traveling through unfamiliar cities. And this Sony nav-u unit now have 30 percent more brand icons than previous models (more than 150 brands).

With the RDS-TMC receiver built into the cradle, you can get real-time traffic updates to help you navigate around traffic jams.

The NV-U94T’s cradle has a built-in RDS-TMC real-time traffic receiver. With RDS-TMC real-time traffic functionality, the NV-U94T can notify you in available coverage areas of up-to-date traffic conditions. The device can automatically display the estimated number of minutes delay and if desired, can automatically reroute you around the incident. The NV-U94T comes with 90 days of real-time traffic free of charge. For continued traffic service, a subscription can cost as little as a few dollars per month after the initial trial period.

The new photo viewer feature turns the screen into a picture frame. You can view your digital images by inserting a Memory Stick into the Memory Stick Pro Duo slot. The NV-U94T also can play MP3 and non-DRM AAC music files and MPEG-4 video files from Memory Stick PRO Duo media. Sony has incorporated stereo Bluetooth technology (A2DP profile) into the device, allowing audio to be streamed wirelessly from the device to a compatible Bluetooth-enabled car stereo system.

Hands-free calling is also supported. With a built-in microphone, drivers can use voice commands to initiate calls via compatible Bluetooth-enabled cell phones. You can transfer your phone’s address book over to the NV-U94T, which makes dialing a contact easier and safer. The phone dialing function is also linked to the points of interest (POI) database, enabling the user to search for a POI, such as a restaurant, and then call ahead for information.

With the new Gesture Command feature, you can jump to commands with one touch on the display. For example, you can advance to the next picture in the photo viewer or music track in the audio player with a swipe of the finger from left to right across the screen. Commonly used commands such as “take me home” may be accessed by gesturing an inverted “V” on the screen versus paging through numerous menu screens. Other gesture commands include zoom in or out and call home.

Using the included Super Suction Cup, mounting the NV-U94T to either the dashboard, console, or windshield in virtually any vehicle is quick and easy. Stable and secure while driving, it can be easily removed whenever you want to take it with you.

Other features include:

  • 4.8-inch anti-glare LCD touchscreen with 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio
  • SiRF star III GPS receiver with POSITION plus
  • TTS (Text to Speech): The device utilizes spoken commands ensuring you are able to follow the directions by street names.
  • 3D Junction Guide: The device’s dual view capability displays dynamic route information, in addition to the conventional map view, to provide an even clearer view of what’s at the next turn or in a highway merge scenario, which junction to take.
  • Battery life: Up to 2 hours
  • Battery charging time: 3 hours when on, 1.5 hours in standby mode
  • Dimensions: 5.9 x 3.4 x 0.8 inches
  • Weight: 8.8 ounces

Nicely compact, the Sony NV-U94T provides excellent viewing of navigation while not blocking your view of the road.

4 Stars Operating Condition A Big Concern!
I have been getting facsinated by Sony Nav U94T since I saw at RadioShack for Christmas Sales but some how, I managed to overcome my facsination and didn’t buy yet anothe GPS[I have Navigon7100,Pharos 150PDR and Garmin Street Pilot c550]. However, I kept inclined towards purchasing yet another GPS. My tie is b/w Garmin 265WT, Navigon 7200T and Sony NavU-94T.

Today I was browsing the Sony website for the technical details of this unit and I was concerned a little bit when I saw its operating conditions. As per web site, its operating conditions are

Operating Conditions

Operating Temperature : 5 - 45 Degrees Celsius (41-113 Degrees Fahrenheit)

For Chicago and some other cold areas, this condition means you can’t operate this GPS in Winter. I haven’t purchase this GPS yet and I did gave it 4 star [to avoid shattering its existing rating] and am putting this review just as a WORD OF CAUTION for people who live in colder areas like Chicago etc.

The actual website link to all tech details is:

4 Stars Sony GPS

First know that some of these units have a virus in them. Once you get it go to the site and the numbers are there.

I have had this gps for a couple of days. The main reason I chose this one was the gps, reviews, brand name, the large widescreen (getting older),text to speech and for my business

What I can say what I like about this GPS is the way the cradle clicks on and off the base. It sticks very well to the window and don’t leave any residue on it.

The manuel does not explain things in details. It is written like we already know about the product. The quick start book is quick. I have been on their site numerous times to pull the complete manuel up. That has been helpful however it is not explained well.

Don’t go to there site for help because there is none. This is why it is so important for us to keep our reviews going. I don’t think we will ever be able to get new maps from them.

The actual GPS is great. You only have one each english or spanish speaking man or women that you can choose from. However you can understand them very well. You can customise the colors for the map.

I know that these are not brand new maps. The new stores in our area that have been there for two years or less can not locate them.

The Gps does sometimes take you on crazy routes however it gets you there. I am sure other Gps does the same so I would say that is minor.

The bluetooth is easy to set up if you had another gps to pair a telephone to. The volume is loud enough for you and the other person on the telephone to hear you. The other person did experience echos really bad. I went to Sony site however their site dont’ have any problem solvers. I went around on the internet and I found some tips that really work. I put the phone closer to the gps and cut the sound down somewhat and it worked. I think one other person that reviewed the product said that it echoed.

Would I buy this again? yes however Sony would have to have updated maps and more information (problem solving)on their site.

3 Stars Good Value - Some Problems
I thought this nav unit was a bargin at it’s present reduced price of $199 on Amazon, especially with the 4.8″ screen size, so I bought it. I have been very impressed with the look and organization of the display and the Bluetooth has performed flawlessly. Additionally, the mounting system is the best I’ve seen in a portable nav unit. The main problem I have had with the product is that the battery life is so short that it is just not acceptable. It is almost necessary to keep it plugged in at all times, that may or may not be a problem for everyone, but it is annoying to me!

The maps have proven to be accurate, but the routing is terrible. The unit will often take a route that is much more lengthy than the most direct route, it’s hard to figure out at times. Overall, I would say a good purchase at the reduced price, but don’t buy it at the list price of $399.

5 Stars Great GPS, Best Price
I went to a local electronics store looking for GPS systems. They had several brands next to each other, and I was able to see that the screen on the SONY looked much brighter and was much more vibrant than any of the others that were on display. There were Garmins, TomToms, Magellans, and a couple brands I’ve never heard of before.

The SONY was not in stock at this store, and I wanted to get something for a trip I was scheduled for, so I ended up buying a TomTom Go630. The reason I purchased the TomTom was because I read about all the updates, and that is syncs with cell phones, that you can add voices, and update your own maps using mapshare, plus get traffic updates.

I’m very much a “techy” type person and I love to have gadgets with many bells and whistles. I got home, spent a couple hours downloading the “latest” maps and voices and all the other things I could download for free at the TomTom website (they have a program manager to install once your GPS is connected to the computer). Imagine how disappointed I was after spending a few hours to upgrade this GPS to find out that my house address (or street for that matter) doesn’t show up on the map! After calculating and finding satellites, it gave my location as being in the middle of some field!!

I had my house built and just moved in last October, but the development has been in existence for 1.5 years now!! I downloaded a map that was over 2 GB in size, and it didn’t have my street!!! On top of that, I used it to try to get to work the next morning and it came up with a route that would have added an extra 25 minutes of driving time! Oh, and I forgot to mention that it wouldn’t sync with my Verizon Wireless Razor phone because it wasn’t the latest model!! So although my phone could see the TomTom, the TomTom refused to synchronize with it!! That was the final straw. This TomTom was NOT cheap ($399) and was worthless!

I took back the TomTom and went to Amazon to see if they had the Sony… and sure enough… they did!! I had it shipped via the next day service. I downloaded the software from the SONY website and it connected to my PC without any problems. (I run Vista Ultimate) But, before I downloaded any of the software updates, I looked to see if it knew my current location… and OUT OF THE BOX it knew my street!! I then went to the SONY website to download the software upgrade, and saw that there was a NOTICE to all people who purchased this model… some of the models contain a VIRUS!!! Luckily it had the serial numbers of all infected GPS systems… which makes me wonder if that’s why none of my local electronic stores have this GPS model in stock. My serial number was not affected by this, so I was very much relieved.

Anyway, this unit is FAR superior to the TomTom!! I have read a few reviews that said that the way this unit calculates routes are a bit “flakey” at times… but so far, every place that I have programmed was routed the exact same way I would go. I also was able to Sync this device to my cell phone!! It was quite simple to do… enter the same 4 digit pin number into both devices, they see each other, and the link was made!! Took less than 3 minutes!!

The fact that this model splits screens and shows exactly how far away you are from where you need to turn is a HUGE advantage over all the other units. And quickly changing from navigation view to “scroll” view is awesome too! You can scroll around to see what is around which is pretty sweet. And the Icons for the POI (Point of Interests such as Restaurants, Gas Stations, etc…) are much better than any of the other devices!

I’ve not yet tried the Traffic portion of this device, but the fact that it comes with an antenna is nice. Many other units that have this feature require an additional purchase. With this Sony, the antenna actually plugs into the mounting device. This may not sound like much, but the fact that both the antenna and the power adapter plug into the mounting bracket and not the device makes it very convenient to remove the GPS and take it with you. Removing the GPS is easy! You simply press a button and the GPS separates itself from the mounting bracket… you can do it with only one hand!

The speaker phone (Bluetooth) works okay. My wife claims that when I’m using it she can hear me fine, but that when she talks it “echos”… which is common with many speakerphones.

So, even though I’ve only had this SONY for 1.5 days, I LOVE IT!! I went to a seminar today, and not only did it get me there without any problems, I was able to use it to find a nearby Starbucks to get a cup of coffee!

Finally, the last awesome feature that I wanted to talk about is the approximate arrival time. It’s been extremely accurate!! This unit tells you not only tells you what the time will be when you arrive, but tia also tells you how long the trip took when you reach your destination!! (It speaks it to you when you arrive)

If you are on the fence, I highly recommend this unit!! It has a TON of awesome features, and is EXTREMELY easy to use! The screen size, appearance, and user interface make this unit a winner!! Considering that this unit cost less than $200 and outperformed a model that was twice as expensive should speak volumes.

1 Star Beware!
Was amazed by the beauty and added features of the NVU94T at a Radio Shack store that I decided to not go for the highly recommended Garmin and give Sony a chance. Taking it out of the box and playing with it for the first 20 minutes was fun but then one problem after another…

Well, I tried to imagine that I was lucky to get this [...] GPS unit for only [...] but there is a reason for this cheap price…go to the Sony website and try to buy a Sony GPS there- all “not available” or “out of stock” meaning there is something fishy going on…I began having trouble with my device as it froze and rebooted so I went to the Sony support webpage for this model and guess what?

[...]

The device has been affected by a virus and so they urge you to call them - yeah, thanks Sony! But luckily mine was fine and the computer was not damaged.

I DO NOT recommend this device because although it is beautiful and has great features that Garmin should imitate, it is slow and has VERY OLD MAPS…it did not have streets and businesses that have been in my city 5 years and there is no option to update maps (even with money). This deal is no deal at all!!!

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Wonderful Product
i got this about a week ago and i love it, wonderful, just turn on and your off. Excellent features and on the money. good price too. 2 thumbs up.

5 Stars Works great
I like my Navigon potable GPS. Never failed me yet and the display is crystal clear. This is my first navigation system and I think it is better than my friends of other brands. The display is excellent, clear and easy to read.
