4 Stars Nuvi 260W
I just got my second Garmin GPS Nuvi 260W today. I wanted to buy this one only because of two reasons. 1) The wide and bigger screen makes it easy for me to read the text on the screen while driving. 2) The Text to speech feature which will help me to focus on driving not reading to the text or be confused about the exits some times as my Street Pilot i5 does. The only reason I gave 4 stars is the lady voice is not as good as it is my 3 years old Street Pilot i5, and she speaks so fast. Speakers vibrate and you can feel it when test to speech come in the action. Overall I am safisfied with this unit. My wife will carry this one I would use my old buddy Street Pilot i5 for next 3 years at least. I would recommend anybody who wants to buy a GPS at this price ($170) not a bad deal in Costco right now.

Magellan Maestro 4250 4 3 Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

April 5, 2009 by DigiBliss · Leave a Comment

We’ve been big fans of Magellan’s Maestro line since it came out in early 2006. The Maestro interface is incredibly easy to use, even for those who are not completely comfortable with electronics. At the same time, Magellan was ahead of the industry with useful innovations like multi-destination routing and pre-loaded reviews for points of interest like hotels and restaurants (from AAA). With it’s 3200 and 4200 series, Magellan has improved the Maestro line giving them a SirfStar III chipset that provides super-fast. satellite lock and making them thinner. In fact, at .7 inches, these are — at the time of this writing (November 2007), the thinnest portable GPS navigators available. Distingushing between models is also fairly easy.

3200 and 4200 Family of Navigators
Distingushing between models is also fairly easy. The 3200-series navigators feature a 3.5-inch screen, while the 4200s have a 4.3-inch widescreen display. The 3200 and 4200 offer great, basic navigation with turn-by-turn spoken directions, pre-loade maps of the 48 contiguous United States, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, and 1.3 million POIs. The 3210 and 4210, add maps for Canada and Alaska, AAA travel information (see details below) and bump you up to 6 million POIs. The 3220 and 4220 add maps of Mexico. The top-of-the-line 3250 and 4250 add a host of other features, including text-to-speech directions that give real street names, bluetooth for hands-free phone calls, integrated traffic (with a free 3-month subscription), and voice command.

Easy To Use Interface
The intuitive user interface makes the Maestro series incredibly easy to use. Use the big icons on the 4.3-inch widescreen touch screen to search for your destination by address, intersection, or any of 6 million points of interest (POIs), including restaurants, hotels, airports, gas stations, and more. You can even touch an onscreen icon for a nearby destination, see name and address, and get an instant route. Turn by turn visual and spoken directions guide you every step of the way.

Auto re-route gets you quickly back on track whenever you make a detour or miss a turn. QuickSpell feature intelligently searches and checks spelling when you enter addresses. The 4250 offer multiple view options, including 2D, 3D, and TrueView that shows your upcoming turn using a 3D split screen. Maneuver List displays the full turn-by-turn details of your route. Auto night view adjusts color and contrast for easy night viewing.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Great Unit Best for the Money
This unit does everything I need I travel from state to state and it works great.

I like the text to speech because you do not have to look at the screen while you are driving

and in areas where there are many streets it makes it easier to know where to turn.

I have not used all the features on this unit but there are many that come with it.

The screen is very attractive and I love the night view. I did have to do a firmware upgrade

but that was very easy you get a cord with the unit to do this, windows only.

I rate this unit very high and would buy another. I first learned about Magellan’when I used the neverlost

on the Hertz rental. This is very similar but an upgaded version.

4 Stars Unique features, good performance, some quirks
I bought this Magellan 4250 GPS about a year ago for $299, so the price today seems to be a real bargain. There were some initial problems with the software which were fixed by a free update. A more recent update further improved routing calculation time and on screen graphics.

The best features of this model are:

1. Logical, easy to use interface.

2. Lots of POIs, AAA information and features (if you’re a member)

3. Clear, easy to follow verbal instructions with appropriate warning of upcoming maneuvers and good text-to-speech for street names.

4. Split screen view shows a close-up, simplified view of complicated intersections, and a chime (like a doorbell) tells you when to turn and which way (decreasing ding-dong for left, increasing dong-ding for right). Both of these features are very useful and are unique to this product line.

The worst features are:

1. Screen is easily washed out in the sun, too bright at night (even at it’s lowest setting).

2. Voice Control feature is very limited.

3. Bluetooth hands-free phone feature is limited, dependent on compatability with your phone, and it’s difficult to know if yours will work well before you buy it and try.

4. Map update is expensive ($79).

Other Comments:

Using the windshield mount with any GPS was disappointing for me. The scree was washed out in the sun and way too bright and distracting at night. I tried mounting in different locations (high, low, left, center) and still wasn’t happy. Vent mount didn’t work well in my car, and alternative mounts would interfere with passenger space or other important things. Eventually I decided to mount the unit flat in a semi-clear space on the center console ahead of the arm rest, using some foam and double sided tape to make a flat, cushioned support. This has so far worked quite well and I wonder why more people don’t try it.

The advantages are:

1. The unit is out of the driver’s line of sight, reducing distractions. The screen is still easily visible, and is more legible since it’s partially shielded from the sun.

2. The touch-screen is right at my fingertips, allowing me to easily adjust the volume or tap it to repeat the last direction. This was much more difficult with the screen on the windshield.

3. When driving, there’s very little reason to look at the screen, so it really doesn’t need to be right up in my face. I glance at it to see the split screen view of an upcoming intersection, or to make a volume adjustment, and that’s about it.

Conclusion:

An excellent GPS and a great value. Do some research first if BT is important to you, and plan on updating the software to get the best results.

5 Stars I tried 3 and this is my favorite.
I bought 3 gps units about a year and a half ago. I kept the Magellan and gave the Garmin and the Tom Tom away. However I wanted to try out the other two so I could compare. The Magellan to me seemed by far the easist to use to enter an address.

I live in Vegas which has had alot of new builds the last few years. So far I have no complaints and the Magellan does a decent job getting me to where I need to go. It does send me out of the way to my own address but it does get me home. I have taken the Magellan to 4 different states and each time i get to where I am going.

There are not a lot of bells and whistles to this GPS. The POI are the lowest total of any of the GPS I tried, but really how important is it to be able to find the nearest McDonalds? The voice is straightforward…ie turn in a 1/4 of a mile, but it is easy to understand and I dont really see a need to pay more so the GPS can name the street I am turning on.

If you dont want to get lost, and want a GPS that is basic and really easy to use I suggest the Magellan Maestro.

1 Star Unreliable
We gave this product as a Christmas present–she received 3 different GPS units and chose to keep the Magellan. It never worked correctly–the satellite did not re-set. She took the unit on a trip to Florida and the current location remained her home address in NJ! We chose to follow the positive reviews before buying this product but it looks like the negative reviews were more applicable to this unit. I would NOT buy this from Amazon.com either–they wash their hands of the situation after 30 days and then you are dealing with the manufacturer who insists on trying to repair the unit before they will exchange it. Steer clear!

5 Stars Excellent
Better than expected. Only prob is it has a little difficulty finding the satelights when I first turn it on. Other than that, Works great, nice size screen, tells speed you are going, but only if you don’t actually have address input in, just traveling. Nice and light, has a nice carrying case. perfect.

4 Stars Very good unit
Arrived in excellent shape, looked brand new. If you are looking for a very inexpensive gps navigation device this should work fine. Small inconveniences of the UI but it is cheap and they are not that big a deal. (slower refresh rate, low contrast colors for the day etc.)

Overall good, not great. If you are going to spend more though, go with a Garmin which will be great.

4 Stars Magellan Maestro 3225 (Factory Refurbished)
No need to be concerned about buying a factory refurbished Magellan GPS. The only way that I could tell that it was refurbished, was the sticker that Magellan put on the box. Everything was factory packaged in the box and looked and worked like brand new. The only negative thing that I can say about my purchase is that the speaker sounds like it is being overpowered at maximum volume…one step under max. it sounds perfect and probably too loud unless you have the windows open. If I had it to do all over again, I would absolutely purchase the same Magellan 3225 GPS again.

3 Stars Slow inputing addresses
The Magellan Maestro 3225 looked brand new. The maps were out of date and Magellan does not have any new free updates for this product. When I would enter an address most of the time I would get to my destination before it would map my route. I have returned the unit to Magellan and they are fixing it now. They will fix refurbished units within the first 90 days if you provide them with a receipt and wait a couple of days for them to send you a RA number. Then you have to pay for shipping via FEDEX or UPS to return it to them.

5 Stars Great Product, Great Price
I was a little skeptical with the particular product I bought being refurbished, but it looks brand new, and works just as well. I would have had to have paid $200 or more for all of the features that come on this one, but I got it for only $90. Great Deal!

5 Stars Great buy. Nice little GPS for the money
I bought this as a present for someone and they just love it. Even though it was a refurbished product, It came in excellent condition and has been working perfectly. No trouble with the unit. I would recommend getting these refurbed units if you want to save some money. There is always a chance you may get a unit that was not properly refurbed but, Amazon is always great about returns. 4 Stars My wife loves it
Gave one each to my wife and daughter for Christmas. The wife says its the greatest - knows left from right, etc.

And she is now free to roam the country.

3 Stars Sorry I had to return it!
This was my first GPS. Liked the look, the weight, the graphics, the voice, the price was good, and it was from my favorite source, Amazon. I should have seen that something was wrong, with the unit. First I would type in address and name, it would give me the same name and a different address?. First I thought, “must be me”, it didn’t do this with every entry. But was a real pain to delete an item, took 3 steps and 3 screens. The next problem was the “Take me home ” feature, It seem to want to enter a different address. Finally it accepted the address, or so I thought, I listed about 10 destinations in Calif. and Nevada. We went to the River Palm in Laughlin, NV, every thing went fine till we were 2 or 3 miles from the hotel, my lady saids “Why is it taking this route?” , “I don’t know? never been here before”, my lady who had been before, told me this is the long way in. Well long story short we got there with about 15 minutes of extra driving. Now it’s time to leave, I touch screen the “Take me home” feature. About 1/2 hour later it seems were headed to las Vegas, Turn the car around, and GPS is asking me to make a U turn at the next exit. stop, turn the unit off, wait couple minutes, turn it back on, but the “take me home ” feature doesn’t show the destination it is using, I have to enter the home address. Four days later I give it a second chance. But it has it’s own ideas how to get to where I want. I don’t follow it’s instruction, it corrects itself about 15 minutes later, all seems well, till we get to our location, then it wants to go to a different address, then the one I entered. That is why I return the unit for a refund. I see reviews that say how great this GPS is, maybe I got one that was assembled on New Years eve.

4 Stars Great value
Very easy to use. Great value with traffic feature. I do wish you could manually type in Point of Interest. The device catagorizes Points of Interest which makes you have to work within those confines. I also have a Garmin Nuvi which allows me to just type in the name of the place that I’m looking for. It then gives me all of the locations of that place that are near my current location starting with the closest. Otherwise, it’s a very intuitive device.

5 Stars great navigon
this is a great product. just becareful on country roads it tends to stick to main roads so this may be a longer route in some cases. but overall i love it!!!!!

4 Stars I LOVE my Navigon
I love my Navigon. My friends all have the Tom Tom but I wanted something a bit more - but without too many bells and whistles. I just wanted to get where I needed to be without going broke.

It is extremely easy to use-the maps are amazingly accurate-and the screen size is wonderful. I use it daily!!!

I did a decent amount of research before making my decision and I asked people for their advice that own a GPS. Surprisingly, the Tom Tom owners loved their product - that is, until they saw my Navigon and they realized what they were missing. My Navigon totally trumps their Tom Toms.

Would I recommend this product? You bet I would.

Map Guarantee

Due to Amazon’s high volume of sales and frequency of inventory turnover, just about every portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version.

TomTom, however, goes one better. Because TomTom regularly releases new maps, there’s always a small chance that a newer map has been released since the production of your TomTom. With TomTom’s latest map guarantee, if the map preloaded on your device is not the latest version, you can download it FREE at TomTom HOME. This no longer requires the map check code.

Checking in TomTom HOME is easy:

  1. Make sure you have the latest version of TomTom HOME installed on your computer.
  2. Connect your device to your computer.
  3. In the ‘File’ menu, click ‘Use Latest Map Guarantee.’ NOTE: If this option is not shown, your device has the latest map.

You can check as many times as you like within 30 days from the date you first use your TomTom device.

  1. Install TomTom HOME on your compter
  2. Hook up your TomTom to the computer via its USB port

QuickGPSfix

Starting up can seem like a slow business, particularly if you’re in a hurry, because the GPS receiver needs to know exactly where each GPS satellite is to calculate your location. But satellites only broadcast their positions once every 30 seconds. So if any of their signals are interrupted–for example, by passing high buildings–the whole position-fixing process has to repeat itself again and again until the perfect fix is achieved. QuickGPSfix takes a smarter approach.

QuickGPSfix can speed up the time it takes to fix your GPS position by downloading the latest satellite data via an Internet connection. Just connect your TomTom device to your computer, and TomTom HOME automatically downloads “QuickGPSfix”–a special GPS data file that helps your TomTom fix your position quicker, even when the GPS signal is weak or partially blocked.

This unique, free service–which comes as standard with the GO (920/720/520/910/710/510) and ONE (XL/New Edition)–helps you fix your position and get navigating faster than ever.

On the road or no access to TomTom HOME?
Get the same “QuickGPSfix” data by simply connecting to any TomTom PLUS service, using a wireless data connection (GO 920/720/520/910/710/510 and ONE XL/3RD EDITION and 2nd Edition). As soon as a connection is established, the “QuickGPSfix” data is automatically updated.

Note: QuickGPSfix data has limited validity. So to keep on getting a faster position-fix, re-connect your device at least once a week.

To minimize the amount of data sent over your wireless data connection, this automatic update is only carried out if the data on your device is over 5 days old. The associated data usage of this service is less than 10 Kb per connection. Please contact your mobile service provider to determine the exact costs. To disable this automatic update, just select ‘Disable Auto QuickGPSfix’ on your TomTom device.

Fun Extras to Personalize Your TomTom

New smart and fun extras to personalize users’ devices:
  • record driving instructions in your own voice;
  • buy fun voices from TomTom;
  • exchange files (of photos, songs, HTML documents, etc.) between your GO and any other Bluetooth-enabled device (laptop, phone, other TomToms);
  • select a favorite car icon on the screen;
  • load, store, and preview photos from your digital camera; and
  • enjoy music with the built-in MP3 player (earphones connector available via an optional SD card).

TomTom Traffic

With an optional RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver accessory, you can get traffic information from the RDS-TMC Traffic service, which is delivered over unused FM radio channels.
Traffic information is fully integrated into the TomTom navigation experience.
The RDS-TMC receiver is available as an accessory for the GO 930/730/530, 920/720/520, 910/710/510, ONE 3rd edition, ONE XL, ONE (30 series) and XL (30 series).

The RDS-TMC receiver accessory comes with a 1-year free subscription to the TMC traffic service.

With some TomTom models, an RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver is included in the box. This is indicated by the addition of “T” or “Traffic” to the model name. An example is “ONE Traffic”.

    User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars a little disappointed, but I’ll get over it
First a little background: I’m a HUGE fan of TomTom. I like the UI; I like the quirky voices you can apply to the application. I’ve been using TT for awhile — since version 4.x running on a Palm Zire72, then version 5.0 and 5.20 on a treo 650, an att tilt, and now the XL 330S.

I expected that on the newer hardware, the software would be “snappier”. Compared to my ancient Palm, running version 5.2 (free upgrade from 4.x), the XL 330S feels a tad sluggish: changing screens, plotting the route, and just general navigation leave me tapping my foot waiting for the device more often than not.

I’m not saying it’s molasses sloooooooow… just that I feel like I have to wait a couple of beats (more than my previous experience) for the UI to catch up to what I’m doing. Like when you type into a form field and have to wait a sec for the characters to show up on the screen :)

That said, for the price I can live with the user experience.

On the plus side: TT continues to plot decent routes and get me from A to B. Sure there are times when I ignore the directions and go “my way” — but in those cases I suppose I really don’t *need* GPS navigation.

I also like the “bare-bones-ness” of this unit. I didn’t want something w/ an mp3 player, speaker phone, blah blah blah. I’m a fan of KISS (not the band), and doing what you do well. On that front, TT delivers.

The biggest “plus” for me is the larger screen. All the other devices I’ve used TT on, were non-widescreen (square). The larger screen makes it much easier to see the “status area” details.

4 Stars Simple, Excellent GPS Unit for Money
This is a pretty good item overall. It only got 4 stars instead of 5 for a couple of minor issues depending on how you look at it.

Pros: Price! Great unit for the money. Many places are selling this thing well under $200. I got mine for $169 brand new in the box. Much cheaper than my previous “box” style TomTom that I got a couple of years ago. It is a good looking unit. It is light, mounts easily, and is easy to use. The screens are easy to navigate after a few “trial” runs to get it setup the way you want. Another plus is that the “S” model speaks the street names instead of just saying “turn left ahead”… etc… That is a big improvement over my older model. The screen is bright and easy to see in the daytime and it also has night settings, both of which you can adjust to your liking. Speaker is nice and loud. I have had none of the “slow” startup times some have mentioned. I guess it might depend on your surroundings like being in the heart of a big city, mountains, or other things that typically impair things like this. I am not so mine fires right up.

Cons: I really only have two complaints. It has typical TomTom battery life. 3 hours on a devices like this seems a little short given Lit Ion batteries available. I am sure that it is a cost saving measure to put in a smaller, weaker battery. I expected it on the unit I bought 3 years ago. I can use my iPhone playing movies, making calls, listening to music for a good 7 hours or more non-stop on a screen not much smaller. You telling me I can’t get that kind of battery life on this thing doing one task? I mean, most of the time I am using this on a real trip, it is for more than 3 hours. It does have some battery saving “options” but I am personally not fond of them. Of course you can plug it in, but I really like not having the cord hanging around when possible. The other knock I have is that you have to buy the seperate “traffic” antennae for that feature, weather, and fuel prices. My other model had it built in and 3 years ago it was pretty cutting edge. I know you can buy them with it, but in this day and age it isn’t so cutting edge anymore as everyone else offers it. I think it could be pretty much included on every unit, especially considering that TomTom makes money off these extra services. Like I said, it comes on other models but at a huge cost premium vs. the value of the services in my opinion.

All in all, you can’t get much more for the price and I recommend it to road warriors that need a great looking/working GPS but not the premium price.

    5 Stars Love it
I am always getting lost in my little scion. Now I love the new navigation system with such a big screen. This is my first one.

Unfortunately in my car the suction didn’t stay well on my window.

2 Stars my bad, tomtom and Amazon no-no
I have the one XL and was trying to upgrade to a unit that would speak the names of the streets …”turn right on Broadway instead of turn right”. In this units description it says just that but actually is talking about the 330S when selling the 330…just did not read it well enough and the description should not have been on this model at all…so not have a unit duplicate to the one I already have..tosed the box know this was what I wanted and am stuck. Do not buy the 330 buy the 330S

My bad and Amazon and TomTom should revise the description!

    4 Stars Almost Perfect
Bad news, no Google Map functionality. Good news they’re working on it.

One of the features I wanted to explore is the ability to update the XL 330S from Google Maps, and from the TomTom HOME program (using Vista). However, as of this date both these options are not available for this model. TomTom advised me that they are working to update the functionality of the “Operate my XL” from TomTom HOME. This is required to use Google Maps to update the XL 330S. TomTom was quick to point out that although they are working expeditiously to update this functionality to work with this model, there is no estimate as to when this will be completed.
