Polar WearLink Coded Transmitter and Belt Set Medium XX Large

March 30, 2009 by DigiBliss · Leave a Comment

The Polar WearLink transmitter combines superior Polar technology with a new fabric design. The electrodes, which pick up the heart’s signals, are engineered right into the fabric strap. The result is a superior fit for any individual body shape, providing revolutionary comfort and full freedom of movement. The transmitter’s textile strap is removable and machine washable. Its clip-on mechanism ensures quick and easy wear, and the belt is easy to put on and take off.

Polar’s coded technology ensures that the user picks up only their heart signal, and not the signal of another heart rate monitor nearby. With millions of HRMs in use today, there’s a good chance that someone working out next to you may also have one on. Interference from any other HRM is now eliminated and an accurate signal is ensured.

About Polar
The first EKG accurate wireless heart rate monitor was invented by Polar back in 1977 as a training tool for the Finnish National Cross Country Ski Team. The concept of “intensity training” by heart rate swept the athletic world in the eighties. By the 1990s, individuals were looking to heart rate monitors not only for performance training needs, but also for achieving everyday fitness goals. Today, the same concept of heart rate training is being used by world-class athletes as well as everyday people trying to lose weight. Polar is the leading brand among consumers, coaches, and personal trainers worldwide and the company is committed to not only producing the best products, but also being the leading educator on the benefits of heart rate based exercise.

5 Stars The most comfortable heart rate monitor chest strap available
I’ve been using heart rate monitors with chest straps for at least 15 years, and the Polar WearLink+ is the most comfortable one I’ve used.

This chest strap eliminates the most common problem I’ve had with other chest straps; inconsistent or inaccurate readings because of poor skin-to-monitor contact. With other chest straps, even with Buh Bump or ultrasound gel, I’ve had problems. With the WearLink+, you just wet the sensors and put it on, and it simply works.

The actual transmitter unit snaps onto the chest strap via a couple of “button snaps”. This means that before you start your workout, or after you’re finished, you can keep the transmitter disconnected (I keep mine in a cycling jersey pocket) and not waste the battery.

The strap instructions suggest a hot-water hand washing of the strap at least every five uses. I rinse mine after each workout in water that’s too hot to put my hand in, and have never had a problem with salt build-up or odor.

It’s the best all around chest strap for heart rate monitors I’ve used.

2 Stars Lasts a year and fails
I purchased the Polar Heart Rate Monitor, and it and the included Wearlink strap are a nice combination when they’re working. But at about 11 months I started getting eratic readings. Not the battery, not the strap, it’s the transmitter. I’ve read other reviewers who have experienced the same problem. Polar has always had excellent products but this is a very short life span for the expense of this monitor and strap. Polar recommends disconnecting both sides from the strap connectors each time the transmitter and strap are removed. This didn’t help my situation.

I’ll try the newer W.I.N.D. transmitter and strap and hope it lasts longer than the original strap.

5 Stars It Just Works
I had a hard time finding confirmation that this Polar monitor, being coded, would work with Precor treadmills, but it seemed that it would. Now that I have purchased it, I can verify that this works just fine on several Precor models at my health club (specifically, I have tested it on the 954i and the 956i). You walk up to the treadmill, and it immediately starts tracking your heartrate. I have not tested it with “interference” as others at the club don’t seem to use HR monitors, but it really is great to have the instant and constant feedback during workouts.

I have no complaints about the requirements on this monitor - wetting down the electrodes and rinsing the strap after usage is just not that big a deal. I’m a pretty large person and the XX-L size promise of the description is real, and the monitor is quite easy to adjust and comfortable to wear.

The monitor itself snaps into the strap firmly, but it releases easily enough with one hand tugging on the monitor.

I am rating it 5 stars because, well, it just works; it’s comfortable to wear, and I really don’t have anything negative to say about its design or operation.

4 Stars So far, so good.
I did purchase this transmitter because the old one, a T-31 just died. I assume it was because of worn batteries despite it was purchased 16 months before. I have used the new one about a dozen times since I purchased it and works perfectly. The battery looks like any standard watch battery and its replacement is similar as well.

4 Stars More comfortble Polar HRM belt than stiff plastic
If you’re stuck with the HRM belt that came as part of a kit, it probably consists of a big piece of molded plastic that wraps around half your torso, with a belt going around your back. Ouch!

This belt is an extremely comfortable replacement that fits better, doesn’t slide during strenuous workouts, and feels better while you’re wearing it. Ditch the plastic and get this replacement.

4 Stars Garmin Forerunner 50
I chose this watch so I could caculate the distance I was running without having to premeasure and area and so I knew the pace I was running inorder me to improve.

This a a great watch once are able to decipher the directions. The directions were very basic and were hard to follow. It took me quite awhile to get it set up. But once I did set the watch up it worked great and have enjoyed it thoroughly.

The size is a little big but not too big where it causes discomfort and the larger size makes it easy to read while you are excercising.

5 Stars Works Exactly As I Expected
I wanted to purchase a basic sports watch to measure distance. After looking into different models I found the Forerunner 50. It was within my price range. It took a little time figuring out how to work it and I couldn’t get the foot pod to pair with the unit. I contacted support through email and they replied the next day. I followed the instructions they gave me and ended up replacing the battery. The battery is common and easy to find. Once I did that, it worked great. I have only used it a few times running on the treadmill. The distance between the two is off 0.4 miles. My treadmill is pretty old so the real test will be to run a known distance and calibrate it from there. I do think Garmin should be a little more clear with the owner’s manual though. I think it is well worth the price.

4 Stars Lots of techie functions…set paired with heart monitor and foot pod…
I purchased this item for my boyfriend’s Christmas gift. He has only used it a handful of times over the last couple of months. After having to read and reread the manual a bunch of times, we finally figured out how to access the easier functions (amongst quite a few options). He loves being able to keep tabs on his speed, distance, etc. My only complaints are that the display is not user-friendly (menu titles are not intuitive and toggling through menus is a pain) and the batteries died after only 2 months. My boyfriend is still trying to figure out the more complicated settings but at least the batteries were easy enough to change out (got replacements at a local drug store that carries batteries for medical devices).

3 Stars great unit but has some draw backs
where the units operation is seamless- it truly is.. ie uploading data to the comp, going into training mode and immediately starting up

however, during a run i would like to be able to see my heartrate, pace and distance in one screen ..or perhaps on 2 different…not 3…thats just frustrating to go from screen to screen ..especially when the viewing screens are not side by side

1 Star Please take note!!!
Let me preface this statement that I normally LOVE garmin products. However please be aware this product is NOT up to Garmin’s standards. Here is my BIG issue.

If you want a calorie count from your workout I hope you have your footpod or cadence sensor because guess what? YOU WON’T get one! Most HRMs I have purchased in the past have the built in ability to give you a very general calories burned. This unit DOES NOT by itself have the ability to do that without the footpod or the cadence sensor (for bikes). Most people like to throw their HRM on and head out to the gym, you might lift some weights, do some cardio (eliptical trainer, treadmill, etc) and then when you head home you look to see how many calories you burned. This unit will not provide you that information.

Don’t get burned. Look elsewhere for your HRM needs. If you want an outdoor unit the Forerunner 405 or 305 is great. For indoors Garmin should leave that to Polar.
